What makes Ethereal Knives interesting for 3.29 isn’t just a bigger critical chance on paper. It’s the chance to play a physical self-cast spell without spending half the passive tree fixing its starting point. The lower base damage still matters, so nobody should expect effortless boss kills on day one. But if you’ve got a little POE currency, it may be easier to put together a character that feels good while you build towards proper critical investment. That’s a much more useful improvement than a flashy damage number.

Clear Feels Great, but Positioning Still Decides Fights

EK has always had a simple strength: point the fan into a pack and keep moving. In tight maps, it can feel brilliant. You’ll notice the difference when monsters come from several angles, though. A poorly aimed cast leaves gaps, and a rare enemy can take far longer than expected if you stand too far away. The spell rewards players who adjust their angle instead of planting their feet and hoping every blade lands. That’s the bit some people love, while others would rather skip it.

    • Use cast speed to keep movement and damage flowing
    • Build critical multiplier after chance feels reliable
    • Keep enough recovery for longer rare encounters
    • Test projectile overlap on larger targets before investing heavily

A lot of players may begin with an ignite version, especially if they want a smoother route through early maps. It doesn’t need to chase every critical stat right away, and the spread effect makes ordinary packs less of a chore. Later on, a direct-hit critical setup becomes more tempting. That version should hit harder when the gear is there, but it asks more from the player as well. You need decent defences, mana or another resource plan, and enough cast speed that the character doesn’t feel stuck in place.

The real question for 3.29 is whether EK can keep its strong clearing while becoming less awkward against tougher enemies. It probably won’t suit everyone, and that’s fine. There’s room for a spell that rewards close-range judgement and repeated casting. When you’re planning upgrades, POE currency orbs can help fill obvious gear gaps, but they won’t replace good positioning or a sensible progression plan. If the critical changes land well, Ethereal Knives could become a proper self-cast choice again rather than a nostalgic side project.
